Cervical competence as a continuum: A study of ultrasonographic cervical length and obstetric performance
-
Iams JD, Johnson FF, Sonek J, Sachs L, Gebauer C, Samuels P: Cervical competence as a continuum: a study of ultrasonographic cervical length and obstetric performance. Am J Obstet Gynecol 1995, 172:1097-1106. The authors present evidence that cervical incompetence is relative and not an all-or-none condition. Therefore, in addition to being a cause of pregnancy loss, the cervix may play an independent role in preterm birth.

A new method using vaginal ultrasound and transfundal pressure to evaluate the asymptomatic incompetent cervix
-
Guzman ER, Rosenberg JC, Houlihan C, Ivan J, Waldron R, Knuppel R: A new method using vaginal ultrasound and transfundal pressure to evaluate the asymptomatic incompetent cervix. Obstet Gynecol 1994, 83:248-252. A description of active assessment of the cervix using transfundal pressure to stress the upper cervix. This should reduce false-negative examinations of the cervix and appears to detect the more extreme forms of cervical incompetence.

Abstract 14
-
Iams J, Goldenberg J, Meis P, Moawad A, Das A, Thom E, McNellis D, Copper R, Johnson F, Roberts J, and the NICHD MFMU network, Bethesda, MD, USA: Cervical sonography and risk of preterm birth Abstract 14]. Am J Obstet Gynecol 1995, 172:257. Large prospective blinded study showing that the risk of preterm birth is correlated with endocervical canal length at 24 and 28 weeks' gestation. Cervical funneling was also a risk factor for preterm birth.
