    • Rey FA, Heinz FX, Mandl C, Kunz C, Harrison SC: The envelope glycoprotein from tick-borne encephalitis virus at 2 Å resolution. Nature 1995, 375:291-298. The surface glycoprotein forms an elongated dimer which is parallel to the viral membrane. The structure suggests how a possible fusion peptide is shielded in the dimer, to be exposed upon rearrangements of the protein when the virus particle is exposed to low pH.

    • Fuller SD, Berriman JA, Butcher SA, Gowen BE: Low pH induces swiveling of the glycoprotein heterodimers in the Semliki Forest virus spike complex. Cell 1995, 81:715-725. A cryo-EM study in which technical improvements have allowed a more detailed map of the trimeric spike to be made. Samples treated at low pH show a substantial rearrangement of the spike. Together with earlier studies of spike precursors, this study results in a model of the rearrangements of the two components of the spike during maturation and pH-induced fusion activation.
