Acoustic rhinometry in the evaluation of nasal obstruction
-
Roithmann R, Cole P, Chapnik J, Shpirer I, Hoffstein V, Zamel N: Acoustic • rhinometry in the evaluation of nasal obstruction. Laryngoscope 1995, 105(3 Pt 1):275-281. In a study comparing two kinds of nasal adaptor, the authors illustrate the care necessary in acquiring reliable data from the nasal cavity using the acoustic rhinometer. They suggest that using a noninvasive, anatomically shaped nasal adaptor provides more accurate results.

The accuracy of acoustic rhinometry using a pulse train signal
-
Hamiliton JW, McRae RDR, Philips DE, Jones AS: The accuracy of • acoustic rhinometry using a pulse train signal. Clin Otolaryngol 1995, 20:279-282. With the use of simple models, the authors illustrate some of the potential problems with acoustic rhinometry. Data retrieved from a closed space will contain inaccuracies that are intimately related to the specific geometry of that space. The occurrence of these systematic errors may introduce significant inaccuracy that may pass unnoticed.

Nasal cavity area in term infants determined by acoustic rhinometry

Buenting JE, Dalston RM, Drake AF: Nasal cavity area in term infants • determined by acoustic rhinometry. Laryngoscope 1994, 104:1439-1445. This study illustrates the potential that acoustic rhinometry has for assessing the nasal airway of infants. The rhinometer, however, has to be modified for this purpose.

Follow-up of patients with inverted papilloma of the nasal cavities: Computer tomography, videoendoscopy, acoustic rhinometry?
-
Lenders H, Pentz S, Brunner M, Pirsig W: Follow-up of patients with • inverted papilloma of the nasal cavities: computer tomography, videoendoscopy, acoustic rhinometry? Rhinology 1994, 32:167-172. This study compares the relative abilities of clinical examination, videoendoscopy, acoustic rhinometry, and radiologic imaging in the assessment and follow-up of patients with inverted papilloma. The authors conclude that acoustic rhinometry is unable to provide any additional information in these patients, and furthermore, other innocent features within the nasal cavity may be falsly misinterpreted as tumor recurrence.

Nasal cavity dimensions in the newborn measured by acoustic reflections
-
Pedersen OF, Berkowitz R, Yamagiwa M, Hilberg O: Nasal cavity dimen•sions in the newborn measured by acoustic reflections. Laryngoscope 1994, 104(8 Pt 1):1023-1028. Acoustic rhinometry was shown to be suitable for measuring the dimensions of the nasal cavity in neonates. The authors concede, however, that its value as a diagnostic tool in this age group remains in question.

Artifacts associated with acoustic rhinometric assessment of infants and young children: A model study
-
Buenting JE, Dalston RM, Smith TL, Drake AF: Artifacts associated with • acoustic rhinometric assessment of infants and young children: a model study. J Appl Physiol 1994, 77:2558-2563. This study clearly illustrates the potential for systematic, and hence unavoidable, error caused by the acoustic characteristics of the space in question. The findings are also applicable to the study of the adult nasal cavity.
