The term "junk science" in this context has become popular usage after the publication of Peter W. Huber's book Galileo's Revenge: Junk Science in the Courtroom (1991), which is an assault on products liability litigation. In it Huber chronicles a series of mistakes made by the courts in admitting unscientific evidence by way of "expert" testimony (hence the term "junk science"). Huber maintains an unwavering faith in the integrity of today's scientific establishment and relentlessly highlights a need for the courts to defer to its collective judgment on complex scientific questions, and not to allow "hermit clinician[s]" to testify as to what they believe on the issue of causation as opposed to what is generally accepted by experts in the mainstream of the particular field of expertise.
