    • Donaldson SS, Hancock SL: Second cancers after Hodgkin's disease in childhood. N Engl J Med 1996, 334:792-794. This editorial highlights specific statistical and methodologic aspects of the study of secondary malignancies. Although this paper discuss the results of a paper dealing with secondary cancer in conventionally treated Hodgkin's disease in childhood, most of the statistical aspects also applied to secondary neoplasms following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Lancet 1995, 345:9-13. Describes the use of EBV-specific cytotoxic T-lymphocyte cell lines to prevent or control BCLPD in 10 high-risk patients. In three patients showing signs of EBV reactivation (as assessed by semiquantitative PCR) EBV DNA concentrations returned to normal control range following immunotherapy, and a complete resolution of an immunoblastic lymphoma was demonstrated in a patient. These cytotoxic T-lymphocyte lines, which had been genetically marked, were demonstrated to persist for at least 10 weeks after administration.

    • Human Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes home preferentially to and induce selective regressions of autologous EBV-induced B cell lymphoproliferations in xenografted C.B-17 scid/scid mice
    • Lacerda JF, Ladanyi M, Louie DC, Fernandez JM, Papadopoulos EB, O'Reilly RJ: Human Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes home preferentially to and induce selective regressions of autologous EBV-induced B cell lymphoproliferations in xenografted C.B-17 scid/scid mice. J Exp Med 1996, 183:1215-1228. The ability of EBV-specific cytotoxic cell lines to preferentially localize to and infiltrate EBV-positive tumors bearing donor HLA antigens and thereafter induce targeted regression of the disease is demonstrated in the SCID human/mouse model.

Blood 1996, 87:386-392. This analysis of 700 patients who underwent allogeneic transplantation for aplastic anemia and Fanconi's anemia confirmed irradiation, increasing age, and diagnosis of Fanconi's anemia as potent risk factors for solid tumor. Furthermore, it showed an increased risk in patients who were treated with azathioprine for chronic graft-versus-host disease.
