Effect of pili of Serratia marcescens on superoxide production and phagocytosis of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes
-
Mizunoe Y, Matsumoto T, Haraoka M, Sakumoto M, Kubo S, Kumazawa J: Effect of pili of Serratia marcescens on superoxide production and phagocytosis of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes. J Urol 1995, 154:1227-1230. Superoxide is known to be released by phagocytes and is toxic to bothbacterial and mammalian cells. This study demonstrates that type 1 pili actively stimulate superoxide production, and this may explain why infections with bacteria that express these pili are strongly associated with renal scarring.

Urinary infection, reflux, and renal scarring in females continuously followed for 13-38 years
-
Martinell J, Claesson I, Lidin-Janson G, Jodal U: Urinary infection, reflux, and renal scarring in females continuously followed for 13-38 years. Pediatr Nephrol 1995, 9:131-136. This study provides a rare opportunity to observe the long-term outcomes of reflux in 87 females with a history of childhood UTI. The findings are concerning in that these women remained at high risk for pyelonephritic recurrences well into adulthood, especially those who were known to have renal scars.

Intestinal carriage of P fimbriated Escherichia coli and the susceptibility to urinary tract infection in young children
-
Plos K, Connell H, Jodal U, Britt-Inger M, Marild S, Wettergren B, Svanborg C: Intestinal carriage of P fimbriated Escherichia coli and the susceptibility to urinary tract infection in young children. J Infect Dis 1995, 171:625-631. Persons who develop UTI are more likely to carry P fimbriated strains of E coli in the large intestine and these bacteria will cause UTI more often than non-P fimbriated strains in the faecal flora of the same host. This implies that P fimbriae confer a colonization advantage to the organism which increases its virulence.
