If the first step in diolate cycloreversion were highly exothermic (ΔH° < -5 kcal/ mol) we would be able to detect the intermediate in the reverse reaction for oxidation of highly strained alkenes. Actually. this reveals that the reaction is not exoergic. however. for a unimolecular rearrangement. ΔS° ≈ 0 and so extrapolation to saying that ΔH° ≥ -5 kcal/mol for the first step is justified.
