Nutrition intervention trials in Lixian, China: Supplementation with specific vitamin/mineral combinations, cancer incidence and disease-specific mortality in the general population
-
Thefirst large-scale randomized trial of vitamins in the prevention of cancer conducted among a poorly-nourished population in Linxian, People's Republic of China. Findings include a reduction in overall mortality among those consuming a mixture of β-carotene (15 mg/day), α-tocopherol (30mg/day) and selenium (50μg/day) that was largely due to a reduction in stomach cancer mortality

The ATBC Trial is the first large-scale randomized trial of antioxidant vitamins in a well-nourished population. This 2×2 factorial trial tested the effect of synthetic α-tocopherol (50 mg/day) and synthetic β-carotene (20 mg/day) in the prevention of lung cancer among 29 133 Finnish male smokers

Lack of effect of long term supplementation with beta carotene on the incidence of malignant neoplasms and cardiovascular disease
-
The PHS is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of β-carotene (50 mg on alternate days) among 22071 healthy, well-nourished, male physicians in the USA, aged 40–84 years. This large-scale randomized trial among apparently healthy well-nourished men provides substantial evidence that 12 years of β-carotene supplementation causes neither benefit nor harm in terms of cardiovascular disease mortality or malignant neoplasms
