Findings include a reduction in overall mortality among those consuming a mixture of β-carotene (15 mg/day), α-tocopherol (30mg/day) and selenium (50μg/day) that was largely due to a reduction in stomach cancer mortality

    • Lack of effect of long term supplementation with beta carotene on the incidence of malignant neoplasms and cardiovascular disease
    • The PHS is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of β-carotene (50 mg on alternate days) among 22071 healthy, well-nourished, male physicians in the USA, aged 40–84 years. This large-scale randomized trial among apparently healthy well-nourished men provides substantial evidence that 12 years of β-carotene supplementation causes neither benefit nor harm in terms of cardiovascular disease mortality or malignant neoplasms
