    • A developmental psychopathology perspective on child abuse and neglect
    • Cicchetti D, Toth S: A developmental psychopathology perspective on •• child abuse and neglect J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry 1995, 34:541-565. The theoretical framework of the discipline of developmental psychopathology is delineated and child maltreatment research discussed wrthin this perspective. Models for understanding the etiology of abuse are presented, together with data on the sequelae of abuse. The clinical implications of the data are discussed and recommendations for future research are outlined.

Child Abuse Neglect 1995, 19:821-832. The authors highlight the importance of examining the developmental period in which abuse occurred when studying the psychobiological correlates of child maltreatment. Changes in norepinephrine turnover are hypothesized to be a biological sequelae of early abuse which correlates with the development of conduct disorders later in childhood.

    • Research on the treatment of sexually abused children: A review and recommendations
    • Finkelhor D, Berliner L: Research on the treatment of sexually abused •• children: a review and recommendations. J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry 1995, 34:1408-1423. A comprehensive review of sexual abuse treatment programs. The outcome of research is discussed in relation to research on the sequelae of sexual abuse. The authors highlight that sexual abuse is an experience, not a disorder, and that there is considerable heterogeneity in child outcome. Therefore, they conclude, it is unlikely that any one particular therapy will be suitable or effective for all children.

    • McElroy S, Keck PE: Misattribution of eating and obsessive compulsive •• disorder symptoms to repressed memories of childhood sexual or physical abuse. Biol Psychiatry 1995, 37:48-51. Three case reports of patients who had no belief that they had been sexually abused but were told that their eating disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms were secondary to forgotten experiences of childhood abuse. The cases suggest that withholding traditional treatments and insisting to patients that they have been abused when they do not think they have been, may have deleterious consequences.
