Autoantibodies to glutamate receptor GluR3 in Rasmussen's encephalitis
-
Rogers SW, Andrews PI, Gahring LC, Whisenand T Cauley K, Cram B, Hughes TE, Heinemann SF, McNamara JO: Autoantibodies to glutamate receptor GluR3 in Rasmussen's encephalitis. Science 1994, 265:648-651. RE-like clinical and pathologic features were found in rabbits immunized with GluR3 protein. GluR3 autoantibodies were identified in sera of RE patients. An improvement in neurologic function and seizure frequency was seen in one patient with RE treated with PEX.

Glutamate receptor antibodies activate a subset of receptors and reveal an agonist binding site
-
Twyman RE, Gahring LC, Spiess J, Rogers SW: Glutamate receptor antibodies activate a subset of receptors and reveal an agonist binding site. Neuron 1995, 14:755-762. Sera from rabbits immunized with a portion of the extracellular region of GluR3 protein and sera from patients with RE have glutamate agonist properties on the subset of cell with AMPA/KA receptors in cultured fetal mouse cortical cells. The region of GluR3 with which rabbit GluR3 antisera and RE patients' sera interact coincides with an important site determining agonist specificity.
