J Consul Clin Psychol 1994, 62:851-854. A well constructed randomized trial that highlights the importance of replication which is a feature of this study. Results were not consistent between samples. Better outcome was not predicted by greater severity of depression, nor was there any difference in outcome between the active treatments.

22. Mynors-Wallis LM, Gath DH, Lloyd-Thomas AR, Tomlinson D: Randomised controlled trial comparing problem solving treatment with amitriptyline and placebo for major depression in primary care. BMJ 1995, 310:441-445. Six sessions of problem solving (3.5 h of therapist time) produced significant benefit at 6 and 12 weeks, equal to the antidepressive, and superior to placebo.
