Predictive value of inducible endothelial cell adhesion molecule expression for acute rejection of human cardiac allografts
-
Briscoe DM, Yeung AC, Schoen FJ, Ailed EN, Slavrakis G, Ganz P, Cotran RS Pober JS, Schoen F: Predictive value of inducible endothelial cell adhesion molecule expression for acute rejection of human cardiac allografts Transplantation 1995, 59:204-211 This study showed that E-selectin and ICAM-1, but not VCAM-1 were increased before rejection is morphologically overt in cardiac allografts. Once rejection is morphologically evident, VCAM-1 expression is enhanced and E-selectin is reduced. This explains some of the variable associations between E-selectin and rejection and may be applicable to renal biopsies.

Cardiac allograft survival in mice deficient in intercellular adhesion molecule-1
-
Schowengerdt KO, Zhu JY, Stepkowski SM, Tu Y, Entman ML, Ballantyne CM: Cardiac allograft survival in mice deficient in intercellular adhesion molecule-1. Circulation 1995, 92:82-87. A complete lack of ICAM-1 (in the graft or host) achieved by genetic knock-out techniques did not prevent the rejection of mouse cardiac grafts. These data contrast with previous studies with mAb to ICAM-1 and the authors speculate on the reasons. These findings are consistent with other studies that demonstrate the considerable dependence on LFA-1 inhibition.

-
Cory S: Regulation of lymphocyte survival by the bcl-2 gene family. Ann Rev Immun 1995, 13:513-543. An extensive review of the role of the bcl-2 gene family in the regulation of lymphocyte survival. By regulating survival of mature peripheral B and T cells the products of this gene family have an important role in the control of the immune response.
