14. Patel V, Winston M: Universality of mental illness' revisited: assumptions, artefacts and new directions. Br J Psychiatry 1994, 165:437-440. Patel and Winston argue that, although mental disorder is universal in that it is identifiable in all cultures, the universality of any specific ICD-10 or DSM-III-R category of mental disorder has not been proven. The authors go on to suggest the need for the development of regional classifications.
15. Littlewood R: Psychopathology and personal agency: modernity, culture change and eating disorders in South Asian societies. Br J Med Psychol 1995, 68:45-63. Littlewood makes the important point that although mental disorders may look the same across cultures, it cannot be presumed that the final common path is preceded by identical antecedents.
16. Lucas RH, Barrett RJ: Interpreting culture and psychopathology: primitivist themes in cross-cultural debate. Cult Med Psychiatry 1995, 19:287-326. This is an important study that traces the historical development of the debate concerning the cross-cultural incidence of psychopathology and introduces the notions of 'barbaric' and 'Arcadian' primitivism and the role this has played in representing non-Western people and the ways in which the West understands itself in contrast to others.
17. Leighton AH: Social science and psychiatric epidemiology: a difficult relationship. Acta Psychiatr Scand 1994, 90(suppl 385):7-12. The author raises the issue of the inadequacy of conceptualization of independent variables in cross-cultural research.
18. Fabrega H: Cultural challenges to the psychiatric enterprise. Compr Psychiatry 1995, 36: 377-383. Fabrega outlines the challenges to the psychiatric enterprise presented by 'the sciences of culture' and concludes that neuropsychiatric reductionism and the restructuring of medical practice may come to mean 'the elimination of the psychiatric enterprise as it has been historically and culturally constituted' (p 382).
19. Patel V, Musara T, Butau T, Maramba P, Futane S: Concepts of mental illness and medical pluralism in Harare. Psychol Med 1995, 25:485-493. This is a good example of the application of qualitative methods in the elucidation of the culturally derived concepts of illness held by all relevant players in a particular region and the application of such information to service development and cross-cultural epidemiology.
20. Patel V: Explanatory models of mental illness in sub-Saharan Africa. Soc Sci Med 1995, 40:1291-1298. A review of studies of mental illness from 11 sub-Saharan African nations, extracting information concerning explanatory models. The author concludes that virtually all the cultures differentiate between mind and body and that a number of common elements can be identified in the various taxonomies and aetiological models found.

39. King M, Coker E, Leavey G, Hoare A, Johnson-Sabine E: Incidence of psychotic illness in London: comparison of ethnic groups. BMJ 1994, 309:1115-1119. This is an important study because the authors focus on first-episode psychotic disorders, the study is prospective and all diagnoses were made at face-to-face interview as opposed to relying on routine data collection and diagnosis. Also, screening occurred in primary care and community settings as well as in hospital, thus reducing the confounding effects of differential patterns of service use.
40. Chung RC-Y, Singer MK: Interpretation of symptom presentation and distress: a Southeast Asian refugee example. J Nerv Ment Dis 1995, 183:639-648. The authors contribute to evidence that efforts to force culturally expressed symptoms into discrete Western classifications may result in errors in diagnoses and ineffective treatment. They argue the need to examine the psychometric properties of measures cf psychopathology in order to achieve valid and reliable results

No consistent effect of immigrant status was found on prevalence of psychopathology, providing strong evidence against the migration-morbidity hypothesis.

48. Webster RA, McDonald R, Lewin TJ, Carr VJ: Effects of a natural disaster on immigrants and host population. J Nerv Ment Dis 1995, 183:390-397. The authors showed that although ethnicity was a significant contributor to variance in level of distress after a natural disaster, most of the variance was accounted for by level of exposure and coping style.
