The quality of N-bromosuccinimide proved crucial to the success of this procedure; traces of bromine and hydrogen bromide impurities commonly found in commercial NBS were found to be detrimental to the course of this reaction. For optimal results the commercial material was recrystallized from hot water as large colourless plates and was dried over phosphorus pentoxide in vacuo prior to use.
