Gene-targetting experiments identify a transcription factor, Ikaros, which acts as a master switch in haematopoiesis, directing cells along the lymphoid lineage. This discovery opens the way to the identification of the signal-transduction pathway that regulates Ikaros and thus controls lymphopoiesis.
