-
Tirelli LJ, Vaccher E, Zagonel V, Talamini R, Bernardi R, Tavio M, Gloghini A, Merola MC, Monfardini S, Carbone A: CD30 (Kl-1)-positive anaplastic large-cell lymphomas in 13 patients with and 27 patients without human immunodeficiency virus infection: the first comparative clinico-pathological study from a single institution that also includes 80 patients with other human Immunodeficiency virus-related systemic lymphomas. J Clin Oncol 1995, 13:373-380. CD30+ tumors are quite common in HIV-infected patients. The authors found a difference in the incidence of the T cell subtype (none in HIV-positive patients vs 22% in HIV-negative patients) as well as a tendency to more advanced disease at diagnosis and more rapid course of disease in HIV-infected patients.

Mutations in the coding region of c-myc occur frequently in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-associated lymphomas
-
Bhatia K, Spangler G, Gaidano G, Hamdy N, Dalla-Favera R, Magrath I: Mutations in the coding region of c-myc occur frequently in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-associated lymphomas. Blood 1994, 84:883-888. The authors analyzed 30 cases of high- and intermediate-grade AIDS-associated NHL for mutations in the c-myc coding region. Nineteen of the NHLs analyzed contained a c-myc rearrangement, and in 10 of these the c-myc gene was mutated in its coding region.

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus-like DNA sequences in AIDS-related body-cavity-based lymphomas
-
Cesarman E, Chang Y, Moore PS, Said JW, Knowles DM: Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus-like DNA sequences in AIDS-related body-cavity-based lymphomas. N Engl J Med 1995, 332:1186-1191. The authors found DNA fragments of the newly described KS-associated herpesvirus in eight body cavity-based lymphomas from HIV-infected patients. All eight lymphomas also contained the EBV genome. This suggests a pathogenic role of this novel herpesvirus in AIDS-related body cavity-based lymphomas.

Detection of herpesvirus-like DNA sequences in Kaposi's sarcoma in patients with and those without HIV infection
-
Moore PS, Chang Y: Detection of herpesvirus-like DNA sequences in Kaposi's sarcoma in patients with and those without HIV infection. N Engl J Med 1995, 332:1181-1185. The authors analyzed DNA in tissue samples from patients with AIDS-associated KS, patients with classic KS, and HIV-seronegative homosexual men with KS. The same herpesvirus-like DNA sequences were present in 95% of all samples and were more than 98% identical for the three types of KS, suggesting that all three are caused by the same agent.

Cervical Intraepithelial neoplasia in women infected with human Immunodeficiency virus: Prevalence, risk factors, and validity of Papanicolaou smears
-
Wright TC, Ellerbrock TV, Chiasson MA, van Devanter N, Sun X-W, The New York Cervical Disease Study: Cervical Intraepithelial neoplasia in women infected with human Immunodeficiency virus: prevalence, risk factors, and validity of Papanicolaou smears. Obstet Gynecol 1994, 84:591-597. HIV-seropositive (n = 398) and HIV-seronegative (n = 357) women were enrolled in this study. Twenty percent of the HIV-seropositive women as compared with 4% of the seronegative women had a colposcopically confirmed cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (odds ratio, 5.7; P< 0.001), but no invasive cancers were found. The sensitivity and specificity of Papanicolaou tests in seropositive women were 81% and 87%, respectively, suggesting that Papanicolaou tests should be effective for detecting cervical disease in this population.
