Effects of saline, mannitol and furosemide on acute decreases in renal function induced by radiocontrast agents
-
Solomon R, Werner C, Mann D, D'Elia J, Silver P: Effects of saline, mannitol and furosemide on acute decreases in renal function induced by radiocontrast agents. N Engl J Med 1994, 331:1416-1420. This study demonstrates that in 'high-risk' patients saline hydration alone provides better protection against contrast nephrotoxicity than saline hydration with mannitol or furosemide. This is the first study which used a prospective randomized protocol to compare these three widely used prophylactic strategies. It remains unknown whether shorter periods of saline hydration would be equally effective in this era of cost containment.
