Atypical ductal hyperplasia diagnosed at stereotaxic core biopsy of breast lesions: An indication for surgical biopsy

Liberman L, Cohen MA, Dershaw, DD, Abramson AF, Hann LE, Rosen PP: Atypical ductal hyperplasia diagnosed at stereotaxic core biopsy of breast lesions: an indication for surgical biopsy. Ten-year results of the treatment of early-stage breast carcinoma in elderly women using breast-conserving surgery and definitive breast irradiation
-
Solin LJ, Schultz DJ, Fowble BL: Ten-year results of the treatment of early-stage breast carcinoma in elderly women using breast-conserving surgery and definitive breast irradiation, Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 1995, 33:45-51. Emphasizes the similarity of breast cancer characteristics and outcome for elderly women compared with younger women (aged 50 to 64). Disease specific mortality for both groups was the same at 10 years; however, a significant difference was noted between the elderly and the younger group in mortality of intercurrent disease. This paper offers strong support for the continued use of standard breast-conserving surgery with definitive breast irradiation for appropriately selected elderly women with early stage breast carcinoma.

Improved axillary staging of breast cancer with sentinel lymphadenectomy
-
Giuliano AE, Dale PS, Turner RR, Morton DL, Evans SW, Krasne DL: Improved axillary staging of breast cancer with sentinel lymphadenectomy. Ann Surg 1995, 222:394-401. Sentinel lymph node dissection with a focused pathologic evaluation of the sentinel node was found to be more accurate in detecting nodal metastases than standard axillary lymph node dissection with routine histopathologic processing. The clinical impact of micrometastases in the overall prognosis in breast cancer patients is discussed.

Should tamoxifen be a primary treatment choice for elderly breast cancer patients with locoregional disease?
-
Bergman L, Vandongen JA, Vanleeuwen FE: Should tamoxifen be a primary treatment choice for elderly breast cancer patients with locoregional disease? Breast Cancer Res 1995, 34:77-83. A review of elderly patients who received tamoxifen as primary treatment demonstrating that this line of management produces a high risk of treatment failure and therefore should provide an acceptable alternative only for the elderly breast cancer patient who is unable to undergo surgery or radiotherapy.
