This PET study in nine patients with sponateous migraine attacks found an area of increased cerebral blood flow in the brain stem which persisted after the headache was treated with sumatriptan, indicating that this might reflect a 'migraine centre' in the brainstem.

Sumatripan had no effect on cerebral blood flow despite being a vasoconstrictor.

Cephalalgia 1994, 14:330-338. This study provides important data on the recurrence rate of headache after relief from headache treated with sumatriptan. The results suggest that migraine drugs might only suppress the pain but are not able to stop the basic pathophysiological process.
