This is the first textbook in the overall field of transport medicine, and more than half of its content applies to adult transport as well as to pediatrics. The comprehensive material is divided into three sections: transport principles, including administrative and regulatory issues; medical management during stabilization and transport; and "miscellaneous" issues, including stress management, international evacuation, and interhospital transport.

    • Four simple pretransport variables accurately predict in-hospital mortality
    • Orr RA, Shekhar V, McCloskey K, Michcle B, Janine J: Four simple pretransport variables accurately predict in-hospital mortality [abstract]. Crit Care Med 1995, 23:A224. The investigators demonstrate that four easily obtained pretransport clinical variables, ie, respiratory rate, alertness, blood pressure, and oxygen requirement, predict mortality of transported patients. Predicted mortality is then shown to correlate with the need for major interventions during transport. This information is a significant step in the important process of determining how to allocate the expensive and limited resources of critical care transport teams.
