Teflon granuloma of the larynx: Etiology, pathophysiology, and management
-
Varvares MA, Montgomery WW, Hillman RE: Teflon granuloma of the larynx: etiology, pathophysiology, and management. Ann Otol Rhinol Laryngol 1995, 104:511-515. This retrospective study reviews the results of Teflon injection for medialization of the paralyzed vocal fold. The authors suggest that the incidence of Teflon granuloma is much higher than the 2% to 3% incidence cited in the literature. Management of Teflon granuloma is also addressed.

Fate of liposuctioned and purified autologous fat injections in the canine vocal fold
-
Mikus JL, Koufman JA, Kilpatrick SE: Fate of liposuctioned and purified autologous fat injections in the canine vocal fold. Laryngoscope 1995, 105:17-22. Purified autologous fat was injected into the canine vocal fold. The authors hypothesized that by removing free fatty acids and triglycerides from the graft, an attenuated host inflammatory response would decrease resorption. The anticipated improvement in graft survival was not realized because purified autologous fat actually resorbed faster than liposuctioned fat.

The pilot hole technique in type I thyroplasty
-
Lee EC, Kuriloff DB: The pilot hole technique in type I thyroplasty. Laryngoscope 1995, 105:768-770. The authors describe a method for accurately determining placement of the window in type I thyroplasty. A pilot hole is drilled using standard anatomic landmarks and the position confirmed using fiberoptic laryngoscopy and a lacrimal probe. Adjustments in the position of the thyroid cartilage window can then be made by using the lacrimal probe as a guide.

-
Bielamowicz S, Berke GS: An improved method of medialization laryngoplasty using a three-sided thyroplasty window. Laryngoscope 1995, 105:537-539. The authors describe a variation of the type I thyroplasty as originally described by Isshiki et al. (Acta Otolaryngol 1974, 78:451-457). To prevent anterior vocal fold notching, a three-sided thyroid cartilage window is made, leaving the anterior cartilagenous border intact. The problem of implant extrusion is addressed, and an innovative Silastic wedge is described to alleviate this problem.
