Benign lesions of the vocal folds: Histopathology and phonotrauma
-
Dikkers FG, Nikkels PGJ: Benign lesions of the vocal folds: histopathology and phonotrauma. Ann Otol Rhinol Laryngol 1995, 104:698-703. This study reports findings from a single-blind histopathologic examination of 92 vocal folds with benign lesions, including nodules, polyps, and Reinke's edema. Unique patterns of basement membrane disruption, vessel wall thickening, edema, and signs of recent bleeding are interpreted as unique pathogenetic models for benign laryngeal lesions.

Benign pathologic responses of the larynx
-
Gray SD, Hammond W, Hanson DF: Benign pathologic responses of the larynx. Ann Otol Rhinol Laryngol 1995, 104:13-18. The extracellular matrices of normal vocal folds and benign laryngeal lesions were examined with respect to glycoprotein content. Normal vocal folds were found to contain moderate fibronectin deposition, whereas nodules showed intense fibronectin staining and BMZ injury. Reinke's edema showed little fibronectin deposition and BMZ injury.

The intermediate layer: A morphologic study of the elastin and hyaluronic acid constituents of normal human vocal folds
-
Edited by Titze I. Iowa City: National Center for Voice and Speech
-
Hammond T, Zhou R, Hammond E, Pawlak A, Gray S: The intermediate layer: a morphologic study of the elastin and hyaluronic acid constituents of normal human vocal folds. In The NCVS Status and Progress Report-8. Edited by Titze I. Iowa City: National Center for Voice and Speech; 1995:49-54. Elastin composition of the lamina propria was found to distinguish at least three morphologic layers that are likely to differ in elasticity. Hyaluronic acid also was found to be abundant in the lamina propria, with men showing relatively higher hyaluronic content than women. These differences are examined with respect to their importance in the mechanics of phonation and potential for protection against phonotrauma.
