    • Müller-Ladner U, Kriegsmann J, Tschopp J, Gay RE, Gay S: Demonstration of granzyme A and perform mRNA in synovium of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis Rheum 1995, 38:477-484. Messenger RNA of two cytotoxic molecules was found to be present in rheumatoid synovium. Both granzyme A and perforin bear the potential to be key molecules in the pathogenesis of RA. Granzyme A degrades basement membrane collagen type IV and has antiretroviral activity. Perforin is able to trigger apoptosis.

    • A new model for rheumatoid arthritis generated by engraftment of rheumatoid synovial tissue and normal human cartilage into SCID mice
    • Geiler T, Kriegsmann J, Keyszer G, Gay RE, Gay S: A new model for rheumatoid arthritis generated by engraftment of rheumatoid synovial tissue and normal human cartilage into SCID mice. Arthritis Rheum 1994, 37:1664-1671. Animal models that reflect RA in total are currently not available. The authors present a novel model that imitates the pivotal mechanism in the rheumatoid joint, the invasion of rheumatoid synovium into the adjacent cartilage.

    • Comparative analysis of cathepsin L, cathepsin O, and collagenase mRNA expression in synovial tissues of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritls by in situ hybridization
    • Keyszer GM, Heer AH, Kriegsmann J, Geiler T, Trabandt A, Keysser M, Gay RE, Gay S: Comparative analysis of cathepsin L, cathepsin O, and collagenase mRNA expression in synovial tissues of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritls by in situ hybridization. Arthritis Rheum 1995, 38:976-984. The authors not only present evidence that mRNA of different matrix-degrading enzymes is present in rheumatoid synovium but also compare the presence of these molecules in RA compared with osteoarthritis.
