Prevalence of Hypertension in the US adult population: Results from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1988-1991
-
Burt VL, Whelton P, Roccella EJ, Brown C, Cutler JA, Higgins M, Horan MJ, Labarthe D: Prevalence of Hypertension in the US adult population: results from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1988-1991. Hypertension 1995, 25:305-313. Data from phase 1 of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), collected from 9901 participants aged 18 years and older from 1988-1991, indicate that 24% or an estimated 43 million of the adult population of the USA had hypertension. In all age and racial groups surveyed, men had average SBP and DBP that were 6-7 and 3-5 mmHg higher, respectively, than the average values in women. Men started to have hypertension from early adulthood; however, the rise of blood pressure with age was steeper for women than for men. As a result, average SBP for women was as high as or higher than the corresponding value for men during and after the seventh decade. Theee data indicate a sexually dimorphic pattern of hypertension in the human population.

Male-female differences in fertility and blood pressure in ACE-deficient mice
-
Krege JH, John SWM, Langenbach LL, Hodgin JB, Hagaman JR, Bachman ES, Jennette JC, O'Brien DA, Smithies O: Male-female differences in fertility and blood pressure in ACE-deficient mice. Nature 1995, 375:146-148. The authors have generated a strain of mice that carries an insertional mutation that inactivates ACE. Male mice having a single copy of the ACE gene have blood pressure significantly lower than males having two copies of the gene, whereas females having one and two copies of the gene appear to have identical blood pressures. This suggests that genetic variation in the somatic ACE gene may account for the sexual dimorphism of blood pressure in the mouse.

Gender and dietary NaCl in spontaneously hypertensive and Wistar-Kyoto rats
-
Calhoun DA, Zhu ST, Chen YF, Oparil S: Gender and dietary NaCl in spontaneously hypertensive and Wistar-Kyoto rats. Hypertension 1995, 26:285-289. The authors used a telemetry monitoring system to evaluate the effects of high dietary NaCl exposure on diurnal variation of blood pressure in male and female SHR and WKY rats. Two-week high dietary NaCl (8%) ingestion significantly increased both day-time and night-time mean arterial pressure in male SHR, and increased night-time mean arterial pressure in male WKY. High dietary NaCl did not increase either day-time or night-time mean arterial pressure in female rats of either strain. These results indicate a sexually dimorphic response to dietary NaCl ingestion.
