Targeted disruption of the NF-IL6 gene discloses its essential role in bacteria killing and tumor cytotoxicity by macrophages
-
Tanaka T, Akira S, Yoshida K, Umemoto M, Yoneda Y, Shirafuji N, Fujiwara H, Suematsu S, Yoshida N, Kishimoto T: Targeted disruption of the NF-IL6 gene discloses its essential role in bacteria killing and tumor cytotoxicity by macrophages. Cell 1995, 80:353-361. The NF-IL6 knockout mice demonstrates that NF-IL6 is essential for bactericidal and tumoricidal activities by macrophages. This study also shows that NF-IL6 is not essential for several cytokines except for G-CSF, the expression of which has been considered to be mediated by NF-IL6.

Molecular cloning of APRF, a novel IFN-stimulated gene factor 3 p91-related transcription factor involved in the gp130-mediated signaling pathway
-
Akira S, Nishio Y, Inoue M, Wang XJ, Wei S, Matsusaka T, Yoshida K, Sudo T, Naruto M, Kishimoto T: Molecular cloning of APRF, a novel IFN-stimulated gene factor 3 p91-related transcription factor involved in the gp130-mediated signaling pathway. Cell 1994, 77:63-71. With the paper by Zhong et al. (Science 1994, 264:95-98), this paper provides first convincing evidence that cytokines other than interferons use a novel STAT family member as well as the similar Jak-STAT signaling pathway that interferons do. These papers suggest differential use of STAT family members may explain the functional diversity exerted by individual cytokines.
