Mutations in Fas associated with human lymphoproliferative syndrome and autoimmunity
-
•] document the association of defects in Fas with a human lymphoproliferative syndrome, which in some individuals is also associated with autoimmune disorders. These studies are particularly relevant because they reveal that, in contrast to the lpt, multiple different Fas gene mutations can be responsible for a defect in apoptosis.

Induction of apoptosis in mature T cells by tumour necrosis factor
-
Zheng L, Fisher G, Miller RE, Peschon J, Lynch DH, Lenardo MJ: Induction of apoptosis in mature T cells by tumour necrosis factor. Nature 1995, 377:348-352. With the aim of understanding the observation that the ability of mature T cells from lpr and gld mice to undergo apoptotic cell death is not completely obliterated, these authors demonstrate that TNF can mediate Fas-independent mature T-cell apoptosis. Mediation involves the p75 TNF receptor, and a suggestion is made that Fas and TNF receptor act on non-overlapping T-cell populations.

T helper cell subsets in insulin-dependent diabetes
-
Katz JD, Benoist C, Mathis D: T helper cell subsets in insulin-dependent diabetes. Science 1995, 268:1185-1189. This paper makes the point that the concept of protection from diabetes development in NOD mice resulting from suppression of nocuous Th1 responses by Th2 cells may be too simplistic. Although Th2-like responses have been found correlated with protection from diabetes in this study, skewed injected Th2 cell lines were incapable of preventing disease induction by Th1 cell lines.

Regulatory T cell clones induced by oral tolerance: Suppression of autoimmune encephalomyelitis
-
Chen Y, Kuchroo VK, Inobe J-i, Hafler DA, Weiner HL: Regulatory T cell clones induced by oral tolerance: suppression of autoimmune encephalomyelitis. Science 1994, 265:1237-1241. Provides evidence that upon feeding mice a low-dose MBP, tolerance can result from induction of a regulatory set of cells. These regulatory cells may not be classical Th2 cells, as the protective activity depended on TGFβ production by these cells.
