Presents results indicating the presence of a signaling cascade that appears to influence the left-right orientation of chick embryos, which consists of an asymmetric activin-like activity that ipsilaterally inhibits SHH expression in Hensen's node, resulting in a contralateral induction of the TGF-β family member cNR-1. Unilateral grafting of sources of activin or SHH can randomize the left-right orientation of embryos.
