This study used a team approach to the technical and physical evaulation of classical dancers. The team was comprised of an orthopedic surgeon, dance instructors, and physical therapists, all of whom were familiar with the requirements of an accomplished dancer. The process began with a questionnaire and continued with a physical evaluation of the basic dance positions. Dancers were observed in different positions to assess alignment and mobility. The heightened awareness provided by this screening process benefited both the dancer and the practitioner. Use of this screening tool may help decrease the incidence of acute and chronic injury in the dance population. This process also enhanced communication between dancers, instructors, and orthopedists by removing the barriers that have traditionally separated the medical and dance communities.

    • Micheli LJ, Wood R: Back pain in young athletes: significant differences from adults in causes and patterns. Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med 1995, 149:15-18. This retrospective study assessed the different causes for back pain in 100 adults and 100 active adolescents. The most common finding in the adolescent group was posterior element derangement; in the adult population, it was discogenic back pain. Spondylolysis was found in five adults and 47 adolescents. Muscle strain accounted for back pain in 27 adults and six adolescents. Spinal stenosis and osteoarthritis were found as causes for back pain in 10 adults but in no adolescents. The differences in the two populations were statistically significant. This study showed there is a significant difference in the major causes of low back pain in young athletes versus the adult population. Physicians treating back pain in the adolescent athlete should resist the "back strain" diagnosis and be certain to rule out an occult posterior element derangement.

    • Self-reported musculoskeletal pain and discomfort in professional ballet dancers in Sweden
    • Ramel E, Moritz U: Self-reported musculoskeletal pain and discomfort in professional ballet dancers in Sweden. Scand J Rehabil Med, 1994, 26:11-16. This study from Sweden examined 128 dancers and their responses to a questionnaire regarding musculoskeletal problems and their work environment. Of these professional dancers, 121 had experienced some trouble during the preceding 12 months. The most common site of injury was the low back, followed by ankles and feet and the neck. Ankle and foot injury prevented dancers from performing most often, followed by low back trouble and neck problems. Of 472 injuries, 168 prevented the dancers from doing their daily work. Most of the dancers thought their injuries were increased by poor training habits and that decreased injury was related to passive therapeutic treatments. The incidence of back problems in this population (70%) was greater than in most other working groups studied. The study showed no increase in back pain in those with hip problems, a finding that contradicted previous studies. The study also stressed that the classical dancer is both an athlete and an artist and that therefore the musculoskeletal problems must be addressed from both a physical and a psychological point of view.
