Pegelow CH, Adams RJ, Abboud M, Berman B, Miller ST, Olivieri N, Vichinsky E. Wang W, Brambilla D: Risk for recurrent stroke in sickle cell disease treated with erythrocyte transfusions. J Pediatr 1995, 126: 896-899. The first recent data on the efficacy of chronic transfusion to prevent recurrent stroke in sickle cell disease are discussed. Although not based on a randomized controlled trial, this retrospective multicenter study does strongly suggest transfusion is effective.

Case-control study of migraine and risk of ischaemic stroke in young women
-
Tzourio C, Tehindrazanarivelo A, Iglesias S, Alperovitch A, Chedru F, d'Anglejan-Chatillon J, Bousser M: Case-control study of migraine and risk of ischaemic stroke in young women. BMJ 1995, 310:830-831. Although the aim of this well-designed, hospital-based, case-control study was to determine whether migraine is a risk factor for ischemic stroke in young women, it provides important confirmatory evidence that there is a residual risk of oral contraceptives and that this risk is related to the estrogen dose. This is the first study to show a strong interaction between oral contraceptives and migraine.
