A careful study of the pathological material from 72 breast cancer patients (15 tamoxifen-treated) who subsequently underwent treatment for a uterine neoplasm. Tamoxifen-treated women showed a significantly higher incidence of serous-type endometrial carcinoma and of background endometrial polyps. There was, however, no significant difference in stage and grade of endometrial carcinoma between the two groups. Interestingly, a high incidence of uterine leiomyosarcoma was noted in both groups.

A study of 19 tamoxifen-treated endometria found an overlapping pathological spectrum ranging from simple endometrial hyperplasia and polyps to polyp-cancers and invasive malignancy. The findings suggest that polypogenesis is an important intermediate step in tamoxifen-associated endometrial carcinogenesis.
