Cytokine secretion and eicosanoid production in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of MS patients undergoing dietary supplementation with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids
-
Gallai V, Sarchielli P, Trequattrini A, Franceschini M, Floridi A, Firenze C, Alberti A, Dibenedetto D, Stragliotto E: Cytokine secretion and eicosanoid production in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of MS patients undergoing dietary supplementation with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. J Neuroimmunol 1995, 56:143-153. Patients with muliple sclerosis received n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids for a period of 6 months. Production of IL-1β and of TNF was decreased at 3 and 6 months. This shows that peripheral blood mononuclear cells, not only of healthy individuals, but also of patients with an inflammatory disease, can be inhibited in their capacity to release cytokines. This paper does not comment on clinical effects of the supplementation.

de Lorgeril M, Renaud S, Mamelle N, Salen P, Martin JL, Monjaud I, Guidollet J, Touboul P, Delaye J: Mediterranean α-linolenic acid-rich diet in secondary prevention of coronary heart disease. Lancet 1994, 343: 1454-1459. Six hundred and three patients less than 70 years of age were assigned to an experimental diet or to a control group. The experimental diet, tailored after a typical mediterranean food intake, contained less total lipids, saturated fats and cholesterol, but more oleic and alpha-linolenic acid (an n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid). After a mean follow-up of 27 months there were 16 cardiac deaths in the control group but only three in the experimental group.

A controlled trial of fish oil in IgA nephropathy
-
Donadio JVJ, Bergstralh EJ, Offord KR Spencer DC, Holley KE, for the Mayo Nephrology Collaborative Group: A controlled trial of fish oil in IgA nephropathy. N Engl J Med 1994, 331:1194-1199. One hundred and two patients with immunoglobulin A nephropathy were assigned to receive fish oil or placebo. The cumulative percentage of patients who died or had end-stage renal disease was 40% in the placebo group after 4 years and 10% in the fish oil group. Suppression of cytokine production is discussed as a possible mechanism for the beneficial effect of this inflammatory disease for which no other established therapy exists.
