Dietary trans-fatty acids: Effects on plasma lipids and lipoproteins of healthy men and women
-
Judd JT, Clevidence A, Muesing RA, Wittes J, Sunkin ME, Podczasy JJ: Dietary trans-fatty acids: effects on plasma lipids and lipoproteins of healthy men and women. Am J Clin Nutr 1994, 59:661-868. This trial investigated the effect of trans-fatty acids at amounts of 3 and 6% total energy intake in men and women. Compared with cis-unsaturated fatty acids, trans-fatty acids increased LDL-cholesterol at both levels of intake. The higher dietary dose also significantly lowered HDL-cholesterol.

Effects of partially hydrogenated fish oil, partially hydrogenated soybean oil and butter on serum lipoproteins and Lp(a) in men
-
Almendingen K, Jordal O, Kierulf P, Sandstad B, Pedersen JI: Effects of partially hydrogenated fish oil, partially hydrogenated soybean oil and butter on serum lipoproteins and Lp(a) in men. J Lipid Res 1995, 36:1370-1384. This dietary trial in men specifically addressed PHFO, which is rich in C20 and C22 trans-fatty acids. The effect on the lipoprotein risk profile of the PHFO diet was at least as unfavourable as that of a butter-fat diet.
