Mucoclliary activity and ultrastructural abnormalities of regenerated sinus mucosa in rabbits
-
Min YG, Kim IT, Park SH: Mucoclliary activity and ultrastructural abnor•malities of regenerated sinus mucosa in rabbits. Laryngoscope 1994, 104:1462-1486. In an animal study, the authors demonstrated that mucociliary clearance of the regenerated sinus mucosa with ultrastructural abnormalities may be significantly diminished as compared with that of the control mucosa.

Toxic shock syndrome after functional endonasal sinus surgery: An all or none phenomenon?
-
Abram AC, Bellian KT, Giles WJ, Gross CW: Toxic shock syndrome •• after functional endonasal sinus surgery: an all or none phenomenon? Laryngoscope 1994, 104:927-931. This study concludes that toxic shock syndrome occurs frequently following FESS and that otolaryngologists need to be aware of this potential sequela to appropriately treat patients with this condition.

Effects of topical nasal decongestants on histology of nasal respiratory mucosa in rabbits
-
Suh SH, Chon KM, Min YG, Jeong CH, Hong SH: Effects of topical nasal •• decongestants on histology of nasal respiratory mucosa in rabbits. Acta Otolaryngol (Stockh) 1995, 115:664-671. The authors designed this study in rabbits to evaluate histologic changes after long-term administration of topical nasal decongestants, phenylephrine and oxymetazoline. The results suggest that histologic changes, including ciliary loss, epithelial ulceration, inflammatory cell infiltration, and subepithelial edema, are more pronounced the longer the decongestants are administered.

Setliff RC: New concepts and the use of powered instrumentation (the • "Hummer") for functional sinus surgery. In Advanced Endoscopic Sinus Surgery, edn 1. Edited by Stankiewicz JA. St. Louis: Mosby Co.; 1995:161-170. The author introduces an interesting instrument that reduces the risk of violating the important anatomic structures in the nasal cavity and affords precise and less traumatic nasal and sinus surgery.

Objective assessment of endoscopic sinus surgery in the management of chronic rhinosinusitis: An update
-
Lund VJ, Scadding GK: Objective assessment of endoscopic sinus • surgery in the management of chronic rhinosinusitis: an update. J Laryngol Otol 1994, 108:749-753. The authors demonstrate significant postoperative improvement in a sequential visual analog scoring system for symptoms, olfactory tests, ciliary beat frequency, anterior rhinomanometry, and acoustic rhinometry. These results offer an interesting perspective on the pathology of rhinosinusitis and the rationale for FESS.

Radiologic assessment of diseased mucosa of the maxillary sinus after functional endoscopic sinus surgery
-
Min YG, Lee JW, Shin JS: Radiologic assessment of diseased mucosa • of the maxillary sinus after functional endoscopic sinus surgery. Acta Otolaryngol (Stockh) 1994, 114:657-662. Thickness of the maxillary sinus mucosa measured at the midpoint of the lateral sinus wall was compared on preoperative and follow-up OMU CT. Improvement in the diseased mucosa of the maxillary sinus, as evaluated on OMU CT, was observed in 69.7% of the patients, and such mucosal changes did not differ significantly among 2-, 4-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up groups. The symptomatic improvement was significantly related to radiologic improvement.

Endoscopic findings after functional and radical sinus surgery: A prospective randomized study

Penttila MA: Endoscopic findings after functional and radical •• sinus surgery: a prospective randomized study. Am J Rhinol 1994, 8:71-76. The author prospectively compared the nasal and antral endoscopic findings in patients who had undergone a radical Caldwell-Luc procedure with those in the FESS group, indicating that endoscopically enlarged antral ostium has a higher rate of patency.
