Altered rectal perception is a biological marker of patients with irritable bowel syndrome
-
Mertz H, Naliboff B, Munakata J, Niazi N, Mayer EA: Altered rectal perception is a biological marker of patients with irritable bowel syndrome. Gastroenterology 1995, 109:40-52. This study demonstrates that 94% of patients with IBS have altered rectal perception manifested by lowered thresholds for discomfort, increased intensity of sensations, or altered viscerosomatic referral.

This study demonstrated that patients with IBS had lowered thresholds to phasic distention rather than ramp distention and that rapid phasic distention preferentially stimulates splanchnic afferents.
