Transient aggregation of major histocompatibility complex class II chains during assembly in normal spleen cells
-
Marks MS, Germain RN, Bonifacino JS: Transient aggregation of major histocompatibility complex class II chains during assembly in normal spleen cells. J Biol Chem 1995, 270:10475-10481. This paper shows that nascent α and β chains form high molecular weight aggregates as a normal class II assembly intermediate. Ii appears to rescue these chains from the aggregates rather than prevent aggregate formation.

Denzin LK, Robbins NF, Carboy-Newcomb C, Cresswell P: Assembly and intracellular transport of HLA-DM and correction of the class II antigen-processing defect in T2 Cells. Immunity 1994, 1:1-20. This paper and [28,29] show that transfection of DMA/DMB genes into antigen presentation mutant cells restores CLIP exchange for antigenic peptides. Immunoprecipitation shows DM to be an αβ heterodimer that is transported into post-Golgi compartments without involvement of li and is long-lived, but is not detected at the cell surface.

Intracellular transport of Invariant chain-MHC class II complexes to the peptide-loading compartment
-
Xu X, Song W, Cho H, Qiu Y, Pierce SK: Intracellular transport of Invariant chain-MHC class II complexes to the peptide-loading compartment J Immunol 1995, 155:2984-2992. The authors extend their previous work on two endosomal class II compartments in mouse B cells, one containing class II-li, the other containing class II-peptide. Slowing Ii breakdown with leupeptin shows that li removal occurs in the latter compartment; the former is most likely a transport vesicle.

J Exp Med 1995, 182:1403-1413. -
Kropshofer H, Vogt A-B, Stern LJ, Hämmerling GJ: Self-release of CLIP in peptide loading of HLA-DR molecules. Science 1995, 270:1357-1359. This paper and [62,65] explore the role of amino-terminal CLIP regions in destabilizing peptide-class II complexes. The results suggest that, as part of intact CLIP, li81-89 promotes CLIP release and, as an isolated peptide, it can enhance dissociation of unrelated peptides as well as core CLIP.
