The usefulness of nitric oxide induced pulmonary vasodilatation is again demonstrated in a study of 13 children with pulmonary hypertension and elevated pulmonary vascular resistance. The efficacy of inhaled nitric oxide to assess surgical operabillty is discussed.

In addition to improved exercise capacity, improved hemodynamics, and improved quality of life, survival was also improved during this 12-week randomized study.

Despite this not being a randomized study and with only limited follow-up data presented, the authors discuss the potential advantages for this new therapeutic modality.

One-year, 2-year, and 3-year survival rates for 34 patients undergoing transplantation were 78%, 66%, and 61%, respectively. In the 24 patients with primary pulmonary hypertension, the 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were 87%, 76%, and 68%, respectively.
