    • Wilson SE, He Y-G, Weng J, Li Q, McDowall AW, Vital M, Chwang EL: • Epithelial injury induces keratocyte apoptosis: hypothesized role for the interleukin-1 system in the modulation of corneal tissue organization and wound healing. Exp Eye Res 1996, 62:325-337. Epithelial debridement of the mouse cornea leads to keratocyte loss through apoptosis. Interleukin-1 inhibitor does not prevent this, but it is suggested that interleukin-1 may nonetheless play a prominent role in corneal tissue regulation and repair. It is hypothesized that an interleukin-1-dependent mechanism may cause loss of stromal mass in keratoconus.

Klin Monatsbl Augenheilkd 1995, 206:268-272. Five family members (in three generations) of a patient with osteogenesis imperfecta and keratoconus were identified on videokeratoscopy as having keratoconus. All five family members also had osteogenesis imperfecta. There was no correlation between the corneal curvature and degree of bone affliction. Both the keratoconus and the osteogenesis imperfecta showed no progression after adolescence.
