The ocular surface as part of the mucosal immune system: Conjunctival mucosa-specific lymphocytes in ocular surface pathology
-
Dua HS, Gomes JAP, Donoso LA, Laibson PR: The ocular surface as • part of the mucosal immune system: conjunctival mucosa-specific lymphocytes in ocular surface pathology. Eye 1995, 9:261-267. These authors investigated three biopsy specimens from patients with conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia using immunohistochemical methods for the presence of CD8, CD4, and human mucosal lymphocytes and compared the results with control patients. They found significant differences in the CD8/HTL ratio and the CD8/CD4 ratio between both groups.

Clinical characterization of primary acquired melanosis
-
Gloor P, Alexandrakis G: Clinical characterization of primary acquired •• melanosis. Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci 1995, 36:1721-1729. These authors examined 146 patients for the presence of PAM. The prevalence of PAM was determined and factors associated with PAM were investigated. They found a prevalence of 36% and concluded that transformation of PAM to conjunctival melanoma must be extremely rare. In addition, they found that the presence of PAM was associated with hypertension, cigarette smoking, and the absence of ocular surface disease.

Juvenile xanthogranuloma of the corneoscleral limbus: Report of a patient and review of the literature

Spraul CW, Lang GE, Lang GK: Juvenile xanthogranuloma of the cor•• neoscleral limbus: report of a patient and review of the literature. Klin Monatsbl Augenheilkd 1995, 206:467-473. These authors reviewed the literature for all reported cases of juvenile xanthogranuloma involving the corneoscleral limbus and reported on another case. The age of onset in the group of limbal juvenile xanthogranuloma without intraocular disease is higher as compared with the group with intraocular involvement. Simple excision is often followed by recurrence. This recurrence should be treated with deeper excision and using a lamellar graft.

Ger J Ophthalmol 1995, 4:123-129. In this immunohistochemical study, the authors compared 35 surgically excised pterygia with seven samples of normal conjunctiva. HLA-DR antigen expression in epithelial cells, B cells, suppressor, and helper lymphocytes. Langerhans' cells, and monocytes and macrophages were investigated. Aberrant HLA-DR antigen expression in epithelial cells was detected in 86% of pterygia and in no control case study.

Cell cycle kinetics in pterygium at three latitudes
-
Karukonda SRK, Thompson HW, Beuerman RW, et al.: Cell cycle kinet•• ics in pterygium at three latitudes. Br J Ophthalmol 1995, 79:313-317. These authors evaluated the cell cycle kinetics of 93 specimens of pterygial tissue as well as 19 specimens of normal conjunctiva from patients at three different latitudes (1°, 22°, 34°) by flow cytometry. The results showed no difference in cellular proliferation pattern between pterygial and conjunctival tissue at any of the sites. However, the entire ocular surface proliferates more actively in regions closer to the equator.

Predicting recurrent pterygium based on morphologic and immunohistologic parameters
-
Rohrbach IM, Starc S, Knorr M: Predicting recurrent pterygium based • on morphologic and immunohistologic parameters. Ophthalmologe 1995, 92:463-468. These authors compared histologic and immunohistologic parameters of excised pterygia which recurred to those which displayed no recurrence. Following parameters were studied: elastotic degeneration, amount of vascularization, loss of goblet cells, keratinization, reactive inflammation, amount of CD1a-, CD4-, CD8-and CD68-positive cells, expression of platelet-derived growth factor-α PDGFα PDGFβ platelet-derived growth factor-beta, epidermal growth, and laminin receptors. However, there was no difference in these parameters between both groups.

-
Cano-Parra J, Diaz-Llopis M, Maldonado MJ, et al.: Prospective trial of in•• traoperative mitomycin C in the treatment of primary pterygium. Br J Ophthalmol 1995, 79:439-441. In this prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study, the effect of intraoperative mitomycin C (0.1 mg/mL) on the recurrence rate of excised pterygia was studied. The recurrence rate in the group of eyes with intraoperative application of mitomycin C was 3.3% and in the placebo group with intraoperative application of distilled water the rate was 38.8% (14/36). Neither serious ocular complication nor systemic toxicity were noted in the mitomycin C treated group.

These authors performed a prospective, double-masked clinical trial of 64 patients (60 Hispanic) with pterygium. The patients were randomly assigned to three different treatment groups. In all groups excision of the pterygium was performed. This procedure was followed either by postoperative mitomycin C treatment (0.2 mg/mL, twice daily for 5 days), placebo (balanced saline solution), or conjunctival autograft.
