The social context of mental illness and violence
-
Hiday VA: The social context of mental illness and violence. J Health Soc Behav 1995; 36:122-137. This review addresses two important issues: the prevalence and incidence of violence related to mental illness; what are the causes compared with the consequences of violence? The use of a causal pathway model addresses both issues.

Psychopathy, schizophrenia, alcohol abuse, and violent recidivism
-
Rice ME, Harris GT Psychopathy, schizophrenia, alcohol abuse, and violent recidivism, Int J Law Psychiatry 1995; 18:333-342. The base rates of various types of aggression in the general population have been difficult to address. Many studies have been flawed because of a lack of consideration of base values. The techniques proposed in this study are potentially very useful.

-
Eronen M: Mental disorders and homicidal behavior in female subjects. Am J Psychiatry 1995; 152:1216-1218. Comparing this study with the Newhill study [31] shows the role of measurement in aggression research. This comparison also shows the need for some consistency in the use of terminology and the need for a more generally accepted model of aggression. Close attention has to be paid to the criteria sets for defining aggression when comparing different studies.
