Anesth Analg 1995, 81:314-320. This is an important in-vitro spinal model study. The distribution of hyperbaric dye solution was studied with three different needles at rapid and slow injection rates directing the orifice of the needle in sacral and cephalic directions. At the slow rate with a sacrally directed Whitacre needle, evidence of maldistribution was demonstrated but not with the Quincke needle. At the fast rate of injection, distribution was uniform for all needles.
