J Acquir Immune Defic Syndr 7: 52-56 Die Autoren zeigen in dieser prospektiven Studie an AIDS-Patienten, die wegen starker Schmerzen in die Schmerzabteilung überwiesen wurden, daß innerhalb von 2 Wochen die Schmerzbehandlung bei allen Patienten zu einer erheblichen oder kompletten Schmerzreduktion führte. Vierzehn der 24 Patienten in dieser Studie waren drogenabhängig. Es war kein Unterschied in dem Erfolg der Schmerzbehandlung zwischen drogenabhängigen und nichtdrogenabhängigen AIDS-Patienten festzustellen. Die Beobachtungen in dieser Studie sind aus 2 Gründen ermutigend: (1) Die Schmerztherapie bei AIDS-Patienten - auch bei Patienten mit sehr starken Schmerzen - gestaltet sich in den Händen des "Schmerzteams" nicht als sehr schwierig. Im Gegenteil, allen Patienten in dieser Studie konnte geholfen werden. (2) Die Schmerztherapie bei drogenabhängigen Patienten warf keine Probleme auf.

Das Fortschreiten der Erkrankung und die Überlebenszeit waren nicht mit der Geschlechtszugehörigkeit, der Rasse, Drogenabhängigkeit oder dem sozioökonomischen Status korreliert. Eine vergleichbare Studie für die deutsche HIV-positive Population wäre wünschenswert, da diese epidemiologischen Daten hilfreich sind um zu planen, wo und wann schmerztherapeutische Einrichtungen diesen Patienten am besten zur Verfügung gestellt werden können.
