NOE experiments on 3a and the corresponding E-isomer 3b confirm the stereochemical assignment. In the case of 3a, irradiation of the vinylic hydrogen showed 2% enhancment of the allylic hydrogens' signal while irradiation of the allylic hydrogens resulted in signal enhancment of the vinylic hydrogen by 16%. No such NOE was observed in the case of the E-isomer, 3b.
