Electroencephalogr Clin Neurophysiol 1995, 96:6-11. This review of a survey from the Scoliosis Research Society tackles the difficult issue of false-negative and false-positive results and strongly supports the efficacy of monitoring. This survey may be a surrogate for a randomized, controlled trial which would now be unethical by any measure.

The authors review the utility of nearly every flavor of intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring. They conclude that monitoring is useful when there is an experienced monitoring team and a surgeon willing to act on the results.
