32. Some in vitro antiviral effects have been reported for hypericum and aloe products. In several patients, we have observed that following self-prescribing of certain products or therapies they have experienced large increases in viral activity. These products may increase viral replication by stimulating macrophage functions (echinacea, aloe, blue green algae, un̄a de gato, silymarin, urine therapy) or by suppressing cytotoxic T cell function (Tylenol, bromelain). In one patient we observed a 500-fold increase in viral activity and the development of wasting syndrome after using a combination of aloe, dioscorea and spirulina products. In-office testing confirmed the relationship of increased viral activity to the supplements.
