    • The presence of surface roughness, even at size scales smaller than the protein dimensions, complicates the interpretation of orientations obtained by linear dichroism measurements. Modeling of the features obtained by AFM for derivatized and cured organosilane films resulted in a roughness-induced spread of ca. ±6°. This should be interpreted as a lower bound on the width of the orientation distribution function.
