(The NHLBI Registry experience). Circulation 1995, 91:2868-2875. This report is the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's registry experience from two time periods, 1977 to 1981 and 1985 to 1986. Improvements in morbid event rates, a reduced need for CABG, and similar mortality rates were seen when the 1985 to 1986 participants were compared with their counter-parts in the earlier registry.

N Engl J Med 1996, 335:217-225. The largest of the randomized trials comparing PTCA and CABG, BARI demonstrated similar mortality rates and MI-free survival in the two groups after 5 years of follow-up, except perhaps in patients with diabetes requiring medical therapy. More repeat revascularization procedures were required in the angioplasty cohort.

Recurrent angina and repeat revascularization procedures were significantly associated with random assignment to angioplasty.
