Has Improvement in PTCA Intervention affected long-term prognosis? (The NHLBI Registry experience)
-
Detre K, Yah W, Kelsey S, Williams D, Desvigne-Nickens P, Holmes D, Bourassa M, King S III, Faxon D, Kent K: Has Improvement in PTCA Intervention affected long-term prognosis? (The NHLBI Registry experience). Circulation 1995, 91:2868-2875. This report is the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's registry experience from two time periods, 1977 to 1981 and 1985 to 1986. Improvements in morbid event rates, a reduced need for CABG, and similar mortality rates were seen when the 1985 to 1986 participants were compared with their counter-parts in the earlier registry.

Comparison of coronary bypass surgery with angioplasty in patients with multivessel disease
-
The Bypass Angioplasty Revascularization Investigation Investigators: Comparison of coronary bypass surgery with angioplasty in patients with multivessel disease. N Engl J Med 1996, 335:217-225. The largest of the randomized trials comparing PTCA and CABG, BARI demonstrated similar mortality rates and MI-free survival in the two groups after 5 years of follow-up, except perhaps in patients with diabetes requiring medical therapy. More repeat revascularization procedures were required in the angioplasty cohort.

CABRI Trial Participants: First-year results of CABRI (Coronary Angioplasty versus Bypass Revascularization Investigation). Lancet 1995, 346:1179-1184. A multicenter, European trial, CABRI demonstrated similar overall mortality rates for patients treated with PTCA or CABG. Recurrent angina and repeat revascularization procedures were significantly associated with random assignment to angioplasty.
