A clear demonstration that cognitive-behavioural therapy improves the functioning of chronic fatigue syndrome, though limited by amount of additional time given to the experimental group.

34. Speckens AEM, Vanhemert AM, Spinhoven P, Hawton KE, Bolk JH, Rooijmans HGM: Cognitive behavioural therapy for medically unexplained physical symptoms: a randomised controlled trial. BMJ 1995; 311:1328-1332. Cognitive-behavioural therapy is successful in helping patients with medically unexplained physical symptoms, although, with companion publications, the authors indicate that this treatment should be reserved for a small proportion of patients.
