A longitudinal study in a stable population showing an increased incidence of ulcerative colitis since 1972; an increased incidence of cases with proctitis almost completely accounted for the increase.

In comparison with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (a known late post-measles complication), no evidence was found for an association between the development of Crohn's disease and exposure to measles epidemic, but exposure to measles before 1 year of age was not shown as a risk factor for subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.
4. Thompson NP, Montgomery SM, Pounder RE: Is measles vaccination a risk factor for inflammatory bowel disease? Lancet 1995, 345:1071-1074. A longitudinal epidemiologic study that shows an increased prevalence of IBD in vaccines in contrast to unvaccinated controls, with an increased relative risk.
5. Thompson NP, Wakefield AJ, Pounder RE: Inherited disorders of coagulation appear to protect against inflammatory bowel disease. Gastroenterology 1995, 108:1011-1015. An interesting survey showing less than expected prevalence of IBD in hemophilia and von Willebrand's disease; raises questions regarding thrombotic vascular occlusion in the etiopathogenesis of IBD.
6. Yang P, Jarnerot G, Danielson D, Tysk C, Lindberg E: P-ANCA in monozygotic twins with inflammatory bowel disease. Gut 1995, 36:887-890. Compared monozygotic twins with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease with non-twin patients and showed no difference in prevalence. Discounts the theory that pANCA is genetic marker of susceptibility in ulcerative colitis.

Futami S, Aoyama N, Honsako Y, Tamura T, Morimoto S, Nakashima T, Ohmoto A, Okano H, Miyamoto M, Inaba II, Naruse T, Nose Y, Kasuga M: HLA-DRB1*502 allele, subtype of DR15, is associated with susceptibility to ulcerative colitis and its progression, Dig Dis Sci 1995, 40:814-818. An important study of analysis of HLA class II antigens at the gene level, shedding new light on the association between disease correlates and genotype and amino acid sequence of HLA antigen. Shows a highly significant increased frequency of this allele in patients with ulcerative colitis, 80% of whom were receiving steroids in contrast to 57% of those not bearing the haplotype.

A much-needed study in the area of childhood growth patterns and long-term outcomes. Focuses on short or underweight children in a longitudinal study, showing that up to one third of such children remain short or underweight as adults.
