Patientswith high levels of apolipoprotein B(125 mg/dl) were treated with lipidlowering drugs (lovastatin, colestipol, niacin) for 2frac1s2 years. There was significant regression of coronary stenoses in both treatment groups, and reduction of mortality due to coronary heart disease.

In421 patients, cholesterol lowering was achieved by partial ileal bypass surgery; the mean follow-up period was 9.7 years. Coronary angiography showed significantly less disease progression in the treatment group compared with the control group, but overall mortality and mortality due to coronary artery disease were not significantly reduced.

Three-hundred patients were randomized to multiple risk factor reduction or usual care. Treatment consisted of low-fat diet, regular exercise, weight loss, smoking cessation and lipid-lowering medication. Both groups showed progression of coronary artery disease, but the rate of narrowing was 47% less in the treatment group compared with the control group. There were three deaths in both groups; the number of hospitalizations due to cardiac events was 25 in the treatment group compared with 44 in the usual care group (P 0.05).
