Epidemiol Infect 1995, 113:283-295. A cohort study showing the extended duration of hospitalization, and more post-discharge interaction. An empirical cost model was also demonstrated on the basis of costs and outcomes for postoperative wound infections databased in a national sentinel site. Results showed the impressive resources spent on postoperative wound infections in Denmark.

J Hosp Infect 1995, 30:149-154. A prospective cohort study which estimated the extended hospitalization as a result of surgical nosocomial infections. Using appropriate matching methods, patients with infections were found to remain in hospital 10.6 days longer than the matched controls. If unmatched, the duration was 17 days. The data emphasized the importance of matching as an essential step in comparative analysis.
